Green School

The Green Schools Programme is one which encourages schools nationwide to become more aware of the environment, and to conserve the planet by making positive changes within the school community. Mr Cawley runs our Green School Committee, and we are active in the local community. We engage in conferences and competitions on a local and national level, and support the BCS and the local Ballinteer community through the school garden and regular litter picks.

The ultimate goal is to achieve a series of Green Flags which will mark our efforts to ensure an eco-friendly environment. The flags are awarded under eight themes which are as follows:

  1. Litter and Waste

  2. Energy

  3. Water

  4. Travel

  5. Biodiversity

  6. Global Citizenship – Litter & Waste

  7. Global Citizenship – Energy

  8. Global Citizenship – Marine Environment

We at BCS follow the ethos “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” as it represents just some of the necessary actions we must undertake on a daily basis, to reduce the amount of waste consumption and litter produced within the school and local community.

Students and teachers are committed to improving the school environment and are working together on initiatives within the school and local community. Initiatives such as keep the street neat in conjunction with our local neighbourhoods and whole school education around the connection between climate change and diet. These actions have played an integral role in BCS being awarded their first Green Flag in 2017 followed by their second being awarded for Energy in May 2019.
