 Part time work
In recent years part time work has become an established feature of student life. The school authorities recognise that such work can be beneficial to students in their personal and social development.

However, it can have a serious effect on academic progress unless it is managed with one's studies as a clear priority.

Students must comply with all Employment Legislation.

A summary of the main rules on the employment of young people under the protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996, states that under 18's may not be employed for more than 40 hours a week or 8 hours a day except in a genuine emergency.

The maximum weekly working hours for 14 and 15 year olds are:

For a regular job the general minimum age is 16. Employers may take on 14 and 15 year olds on light work.

  • Part time during the school term (over 15 years only);
  • As part of an approved work experience or educational programme;
  • During the school holidays provided there is a minimum three week break from work in the summer.

Morning and night work permitted hours

These are the legal boundaries. However, despite the attractions and benefits of part time work, there are serious disadvantages attached to it for students.

It should be managed so that it will have minimum disruption on full participation in school life and on study and homework.

The long term interests of students should not be compromised for short term gain.
